महादेव हे सर्व जीवांचे बीज आहेत. त्यांनाच पुराणपुरुष परमेश्वर म्हणतात. हे सर्व जग म्हणजे त्यांच खेळण आहे. बिजवान महादेव आहेत.  बीज म्हणजे ब्रम्हा व योनी विष्णू होत. एकवेळ ब्रम्हा व विष्णू यांच्यात वादविवाद होतो कि परमेश्वर कोण आहे? दोघे स्वत:ला ईश्वर सिद्ध करण्यात लागले असता त्यांचा कलह वाढला तितक्यात त्यांच्या मध्ये एक अति प्रकाशमान तेजपुंज ज्योर्तीलिंग उत्पन्न झाले. त्याला त्यांनी आपल्या कलहाच्या प्रादुर्भावाचे साधन समजून हा निश्चय केला कि जो कोणी याच्या अंतिम भागास स्पर्श करील तोच परमेश्वर, लिंग दोन्ही बाजूने होता. (वरून व खालून) तेव्हा ब्रम्हाने हंस बनून अग्रभाग शोधण्यास निघाले आणि विष्णू अती विशाल वराह रूप बदलून लिंगाचे खालील भागास स्पर्श करण्यास निघाले. हजारो वर्षपर्यंत ते चालत राहिले परंतु त्यांना लिंगाचे अंतिम भागाचा शोध लागला नाही तेव्हा ते अति व्याकुळ व हताश होऊन प्रथम स्थानावर वापस आले. आणि त्या लिंगाकडे पुन्हा पुन्हा बघून विचार करायला लागले की हे परमेश्वराचे कोणते मायारूप आहे की त्याला अंत नाही. अनंत आहे. विचार करीत असता त्यातून लुप्त स्वरांत ‘ओम’ ‘ओम’ ध्वनी कानावर आला. आणि बघतात तर लिंगाच्या दक्षिण भागास प्रत्यक्ष साक्षात ओंकारस्वरूप शिव प्रगट झाले, तेव्हा दोन्ही देवांनी भगवान शिवाची स्तुती आरंभ केली तेव्हा शिवप्रभू त्यांच्या वर प्रसन्न झाले व म्हणाले मी तुमच्यावर प्रसंन्न आहे तुम्हाला अभय देत आहे. तुम्ही दोघे ही माझेच अंश आहात माझ्या दक्षिण अंगातून सृष्टी उत्पन्न करनेवाले ब्रम्हा व पालनहार विष्णू उत्तर भागाच्या अंगातून उत्पन्न झाले आहेत. तुम्ही मला वर मागा ! तेव्हा ब्रम्हा आणि विष्णू दोघांनी वर मागितला कि आमचे मन सदोदित तुमच्या भक्तीत एकरूप राहू द्यात आणि शिव प्रभुणे त्यांना अखंडभक्ती प्रदान केली.

सर्वधिष्ठान , सर्वप्रकाशक, परब्रम्ह परमात्माला वेद ग्रंथात शिवत्तव च म्हटल्या गेलेले आहे. आणि तोच सच्चितानंद परमात्मा स्वत: शिवशक्तीच्या रुपात प्रगट होतो, तो परमार्थ निर्गुण, निराकार असूनही आपल्या अचिंत्य दिव्य लीलाशक्तीने सगुण, साकार सच्चिता नंदघन रूपाने साकार होतो. तोच शिवशक्ती, राधा-कृष्ण, अर्धनारीश्वर होय,  सत्ताविना आनंद, आणि आनंदा विना सत्ता हे निष्फळ आहें.  म्हणून ‘स्वप्रकाश सत्तारूप आनंद’ असे म्हटल्यास त्या आनंदा विषयीची सुखरुपता वारण होते. जसे आनंद सिंधू चे रूप माधुर्य आहे, तसेच पार्वती शिवस्वरूप  म्हणजेच शिवात्मा होय, म्हणून माधुर्यात आनंद आहे, आनंदात माधुर्य.

प्राणी रुपात जितक्या वस्तू तयार होतात, त्या सर्वात योनी म्हणजे उत्पन्न करणे वाली प्रकृती जननी आणि बीज प्रेरक शिव पिता  (लिंग) होय. अर्थात मुळ प्रकृती आणि परमात्मा हेच माता-पिता (योनी-लिंग) रुपात त्या त्या वस्तू उत्पन्न करतात. म्हणून वेद-शास्त्र नुसार एक ब्रम्हतत्व म्हणजेच प्रजोत्पादन अनंत रुपात विवरण होतोय. प्रकृतीसंसृष्ट संकल्प प्राथमिक आधिदैविक काम होय यानुसार भगवान अनंत ब्रम्हांड उत्पन्न करतो आणि करवितो.
काम ही भगवान अंश होय, ‘ कामस्तु वासुदेवांश:’ (भागवत) लोकांत काम ,ईच्छा मुख्य विषय आनंद होय, सुख साक्षात कामना आणि अन्य सुखसाधनातून ईच्छा प्रगट होते. तद्रूप आत्मा निरतिशय,निरुपाधिक प्रेमाचा आस्पद होय. अन्य आनंद सातिशय, सोपाधिक अपरप्रेमाचे आस्पद होय. जसे विषय प्रभावात कडूनिम्बाप्रमाने प्रेम प्रतीत होते. आणि भ्रांती, मोह प्रभावात मांस मयी कांतीत आनंदाचा भास होतो. याही व्यतिरिक्त शुद्धप्रेम (आनंद) आत्मातील प्रेम,तो आनंद कामना,स्वाभाविक होय हे क्वचितच (जरुरतमयी उत्पन्न होणारी) आत्माचा अंश होय. यामुळे अद्वैतआत्मा हि निरुपाधिक प्रेमाचा आस्वाद दर्शविते. परंतु त्यांतिल प्रेम आणि आश्रय तथा विषय यात भेद नाही.

प्रेम, आनंद, रस हे सर्व आत्म्याचेच स्वरूप आहें.या रसरूप आनंदानेच समस्त विश्व निर्माण होत असते. सर्व वस्तुत त्याच असणं अनिवार्य आहे. सोपाधिक आनंद आणि सोपाधिक प्रेम सर्वत्र आहें. म्हणून कांता सोपाधिक स्वरूप म्हटल्या जातें. सोपाधिक प्रेमविषय आहे. परंतु निरुपाधिक प्रेम निरुपाधिक आत्मातच असतो. सुंदर, मनोहर प्रेम उपादेय आहे. सुंदरी,वेश्यादिकी आनंदरूप  हेयता (अशुद्धता)  होय. जसे पवित्र, शुद्ध दुध जर अपवित्र (अस्वच्छ) भांड्यात ठेवल्या गेले तर त्याच्या संसर्गाने ते दुध अशुद्ध आणि अपवित्र होते. त्याच प्रमाणे आनंद किंवा प्रेमाची परिभाषा कुसंगत आणि अशुद्ध संसर्गात मापल्या जाते. शास्त्रनिषिद्ध विषयांतील आनंद आणि प्रेमांत दोष आहें, हेयता आहें, पाप आहें. आणि शास्त्रविहित विषयांत आनंद, प्रेम पुण्य आहें. परंतु निर्विशेष सर्वोपाधियुक्त प्रेम, आनंद स्पष्ट आत्मा  व ब्रम्ह होय. मात्र देवतां विषयी प्रेमाला भक्ती मानलेली आहें. सजातीय -सजातीय आकर्षण प्रेम, आनंदी आणि काम होय.
परंतु शुद्ध सच्चितानंदघन परब्रम्हस्वरूप आकर्षण, आत्मा आपल्या अत्यंत स्वरूपात आकर्षण  किंवा निरुपाधिक प्रेम आत्म-  स्वरूप असतो. जसे राधा-कृष्ण, गौरी-शंकर, अर्ध- नारीश्वर परस्पर प्रेम म्हणजे शुद्ध काम होय. हे स्वरूप म्हणजे कामेश्वर किंवा कृष्ण रूप होय. राधा-कृष्ण, गौरी-शंकर, अर्धनारीश्वर हे स्वरूप म्हणजे एकचरूप होत. यातभिन्न अंश नाहीत. अर्धनारीश्वर रूपांत मिथुनीभूत (सिम्मीलित) आहे. तेव्हांच पूर्ण सच्चितानंद भाव प्रगट होतो,वास्तविक रूप एकच होय. सामान्य: (हे भेद औपचारिकता म्हणून दर्शविले आहे) शुद्ध परमतत्व म्हणजे शिवशक्ती, अर्धनारीश्वरभाव शुद्ध आकर्षण प्रेमभाव म्हणून दर्शविण्यात आलेले आहें. महानुभाव पंथात म्हटल्या गेले आहें कि संपूर्ण नरनारी सौंदर्यप्रतिबिंब  रूप स्वत:त बघून भगवान स्वत: विस्मित झालेलेतं !

पंच देवतां मध्ये श्री आदिगणेश ह्यांची उत्पत्ती सृष्टीकर्ता महेश्वराने सृष्टीप्रारंभात विघ्न – बाधा प्रशमनार्थ केली. आपल्या साक्षात अंशातूनच प्रगट कलेली आहे. पूर्वी जेव्हा देवता राक्षसांद्वारे पराभूत होत असल्याने त्यांनी शिवाची स्तुतीरूप आराधना केली व त्यांना प्रसंन्न करून देवगुरु बृहस्पतीने दैत्यांपासून  होणारे विघ्नयुक्त कर्माचे भय व्यक्त केले. (त्यांच्या संरक्षणा करीता स्वयं विघ्नहर्ता गणेशाचे रूप धारण केले)  गजाननाच्या रूपाने मां अंबिका पासून प्रगट झाले. आणि सर्व गणाचे अधिपती म्हणजेच (संचालक)  गणाचे पती ‘गणपती’ म्हणून रुप धारण केले. गणपतींना सर्व संस्कारांनि संपन्न करून त्यांना सांगितले कि “हे वत्स तुझा अवतार दैत्यांच्या विनाशासाठी झाला आहे. देवतांचे व द्विजांचे उपकारा प्रीत्यर्थ तसेच पृथ्वीतला वरील जो अन्यायपूर्वक कर्म करेल त्याच्या कार्यात विघ्न उत्पन्न करावे व जो सत्कर्म करेल त्यांच्या कर्माची वृद्धी करावी.  आणि सर्वांकडून सर्व प्रथम पूजनाचा मान प्राप्त होईल. तुझी आग्रपुजा न झाल्यास कोणतेही मंगल कार्य अमंगल कार्यात परावर्तीत होईल. असा वर प्रदान करून भगवान शिवांनी गणेशाच्या वंदनेचे गुणगान केलेले आहे. या करीता सर्व प्रथम गणेशाचीच स्तुती करून मंगल कार्य अथवा पूजा करावी. श्रीगणेशाचे चरणकमल अरुणवर्ण आहेत ते विघ्नांचानाश करतात. गणाधिपती ज्ञांनांचे दाता आहेत. यांचे विशाल मस्तकाची महती बुद्धीचे सूचक आहेत. एक वेळ श्री महेश्वरांनी गणेशावर एक काम सोपविले.  सर्व देवतांना निमंत्रित करण्याचे, अत: त्यांचे वाहन मूषक मंद गतीचे असल्या कारणाने त्यांनी बुद्धीने काम केले. त्यांना माहित होते कि सर्व देवदेवतांचा वास महादेवांतच आहे,तेव्हा त्यांनाच तीन परिक्रमा करून तेथेच निमंत्रन दिले. आणि सर्व देवतां ना निमंत्रन प्राप्त झाले. व सर्व देवी देवता यज्ञांत सामील झाले.

शिवप्रभूच्या डोक्यावरील अर्द्ध चंद्रमा प्रणवरुपाची अर्ध मात्रा दर्शविते आणि त्यांच्या त्या शांत शीतल योग वृत्तीला भूषविते. यावरून योगीगण योगाद्वारे आपल्या चित्अग्निद्वारे संपूर्ण अहंकार नष्ट करतो. त्याच बरोबर पंचतन्मात्रा, पंचमहाभूत सर्व नष्ट करून परम शुद्ध आध्यत्मिक भावात परावर्तीत होउन निर्विकार, शुद्ध, शांत, भावस्वरूप भस्मरुपात विलिन होतात.  (शरीर दग्ध करून भस्मरुप होतात, त्याला आपण भस्म म्हणतो.) आणि ते भस्म जेव्हा शिव धारण करतात त्यातच शांती प्राप्त होते. कारण पंचमहाभूतातील सर्व विकार नष्ट झालेले असतात.  गंगा हि एक आध्यत्मिक तेजपुंज होय.जी महाविष्णूच्या चरणातून उगम पावते आणि ब्रम्हांड नायक शिवशंकरांच्या जटेत स्थित होऊन त्यांच्या आज्ञे नुसार विश्वाच्या कल्याणार्थ इतरत्र प्रवाहित होते. तिचे तेज आणि प्रवाह फक्त शिवशंकरच धारण करू शकतात.कारण शिव आणि विष्णू हे एकच अंश आहेत. शिव कृपेनेच तिचा अत्याधिक लाभ काशी क्षेत्रास होतो.  श्रीशिवाचे पंचमुख आहेत. ईशान, अघोर, तत्पुरुष, वामदेव, सद्योजात — ईशान अर्थ स्वामी, अघोर -अर्थ निंदनीय कर्म करणारे भक्त, अभक्त यांचे कर्म शुद्ध करनेवाले, तत्पुरुष आपल्या आत्म्यात स्तितीलाभ करणे, वामदेव विकारांचे नाश करणेवाले, सद्योजात म्हणजे बालका प्रमाणे परमशुद्ध, स्वच्छ, निर्विकार रूप. आणि त्र्यंबक म्हणजे ब्रम्हांडाचे त्रिदेव अर्थात ब्रम्हा, विष्णू महेश तिघांचे अंब (कारण).  जीवात्म्याची प्रगाढ भक्ती, अनन्य अनुराग, विशुद्ध, निर्हेतुक प्रेमाने शिव प्राप्ती होते त्या मिलनात श्रीशिव चरण स्पर्श शांती पूर्णतेला प्राप्त होतात, हे सर्व उदात्त भाव लिंग पुराणात पद-पद परीलक्षित होतात.

शिव – कारण : सृष्टीत  परमपरात्पर म्हणजे फक्त ‘शिव’ ज्याना बहिर्मुख नाही, अंतर्मुख नाही, उभय मुख नाही,जे प्रज्ञाधन नाही,प्रज्ञ नाही, अप्रज्ञ सुद्धा नाही. जो वर्णनाचे अतीत, दर्शनाचे अतीत,व्यवहाराचे अतीत, ग्रहणाचे अतित, लक्षणाचे अतीत, चिंतेचे अतीत, निर्देशचे अतीत, आत्मप्रत्यय मात्र-सिद्ध, प्रपंच्यातित , शांत, शिव, अद्वैत आणि तुरीयपदस्थित आहे त्यांचेच नाव ‘महेश्वर’ ‘स्वयंभू’ आणि  ‘ईशान’ ते ईश्वराचेही परम महेश्वर, देवतांचे परम देवतां,पतिंचे परमअधिपती, परात्पर परमपूज्य आणि ‘भुवनेश’आहेतं ज्यांच्यात विश्व आहे, ज्यामुळे विश्व आहे, जो स्वयं विश्व आहे, आणि या विश्वाच्याही परे आहे. त्याची भक्ती करनेवाला त्याला जाननेवाला आत्यंतिक शांतीचा अधिकारी आहें.  तोच सदाशिव आपल्या शक्तीने युक्त होउन सृष्टी निर्माण करतो. माया हि प्रकृती व महेश्वर त्याचे अधिष्ठाता होय. मायाद्वारे त्यांच्याच अवयवभूत जीवाने समस्त संसार परिव्याप्त आहे. महेश्वराचे सृष्टी रचनाच्या निमित्ताने दोन अंग होतात, कारण आधार आणि आधेय याशिवाय सृष्टी निर्मिती शक्य नाही. आधेय (चैतन्यपुरुष) आधार (प्रकृती, उपाधी) सृष्टीत जितकेही पदार्थ निर्मित आहेत त्यात अभ्यंतर चेतन बाह्य प्राकृतीक आधार अर्थात उपाधी (शरीर) आहे. यातच सर्वांची प्राप्ती होय.

कारण या अनादि-चैतन्य परमपुरुष परमात्माची शिवसंज्ञां सृष्टयुन्मुख होऊन अनादि-लिंग आणि त्याच परम आधेयला आधारभूता अनादि-प्रकृतीचे नाव ‘योनी’ होय. हे दोन्ही या अखिल चराचर विश्वाचे परम-कारण होय. शिव-लिंग रुपात पिता आणि प्रकृती-योनि रुपात माता हीच  शिव-पुराण सज्ञां होय. गीता हेच सांगते  ‘मह्द्ब्रम्ह’ माझी-योनि ज्यात बीज रोपण करून गर्भ संचार करून सर्व भूतांची उत्पत्ती मीच करतो. तेव्हा या अनादि सदाशिव-लिंग आणि अनादि प्रकृती-योनि समस्त सृष्टीची निर्मिती तेच होय. यात आधेय बीज प्रदाता (लिंग) आणि आधार-बीज धारण करनेवाली (योनि) चा संयोग आवश्यक आहे. या संयोगा शिवाय काहीच उत्पत्ती होऊ शकत नाही. याचे श्लोकांत वर्णन केले ते असे–

  ॥ द्विधा कृत्वात्मनो देहमर्धेन पुरुषो$भवत् ||  अर्धेन नारी तस्यां स विराजमसृजत्प्रभु: ||

सृष्टी निर्मिती च्या वेळी परमपुरुष महेश्वराने आपल्याच अर्धांगातून प्रकृती (नारी- पार्वती ) प्रगट करून समस्त सृष्टी निर्मितीची रचना केली. तेव्हा शिव-लिंग-योनिभाव आणि अर्धनारीश्वरभाव हे एकच आहेत. सृष्टीबीज देनेवाले परमलिंगरूप श्रीशिव जेव्हा आपलीच प्रकृतीरूपा नारी (योनि) ने आधार-आधेय सारखे संयुक्त होतात. तेव्हाच सृष्टी निर्मित होते अन्यथा नाही. तेव्हाच श्रीशिव आपल्या तेजोमय प्रकृतीला धारण करून त्यात आच्छादित होऊन व्यक्त होत असतात अन्यथा व्यक्त होणे असंभव आहे.  म्हणून ते म्हणतात ‘ हे देवी! तू माझ्या अर्धांगाचे  (वाम भागाला) हरण केलेलं आहे. म्हणून तू सुद्धा माझेच शरीर आहे’ .
या लिंग-योनि यांची शिवपूजनात पूजा मानली आहे. हे सृष्टी निर्मितीचे सूचक आहें. या प्रमाणे परमपरात्पर जगतपिता आणि द्यामयी जगन्माता आदी संबंध भावाची द्योतक आहे. अत: हे परम- पवित्र मधुर भाव आहेत. यांत अश्लील भाव आणू नाही.

शिवशंकर संपूर्ण विद्यांचे —  योग, ज्ञान, भक्ती, कर्म, कल्याणचे भंडार म्हणजे जगद्गुरू श्रीशिव आहेत. फक्त गुरूच नव्हेतर स्वयं आदर्शरूप  आहेत. पूर्णत: योगेश्वर, ज्ञानस्वरूप, स्व्च्छ स्वरूप शिवाची फार थोड्या उपासनेत प्रसंन्न्ता प्राप्त होते. त्याच्या उपासने साठी कोठेही जावे लागत नाही, कारण त्यांचे स्थान म्हणजे स्मशान तेथे जाउन उपासना करणे सामान्य मनुष्याचे काम नाही, तेव्हा नर-नारीने  लिंग पूजा करून त्यांना शीघ्र प्रसंन्न करून घेता येते. ते योगी आहेत, ज्या स्थळी ते विराजित आहे, ते स्थान अगदी शांत असायला हवे. म्हणूनच ते मोठमोठे पहाड, शिखर, पर्वतांत विराजित असतात. स्वयंभक्ती करीता त्यांनी लिंगपूजा आम्हा सामान्यांना दिली आहे.  ते पूर्णत: दयाळू, देवर्षी, मुनी असे मानवांचे ज्ञानदाता आहेत. सर्वांचे मनोरथ पूर्ण करण्यास सदा तत्पर आहेत. शिव कल्याणमयी मंगलमूर्ती आहे, विषय- वैराग्याचे आदर्श आहेत, काही लोक शिवांना भांग पिणे वाले,स्मशानात राहणारे म्हणून त्यांचा सदाचार हीनता आरोप घेतात.  पण ते स्वत:चे दुर्गुण झाकण्याकरीता त्यांचा सहारा घेतात हा घोर अनर्थ, पागलपन आहे.खरा शिवभक्त सदाचारी पाहिजे. त्यांच्या भक्तीने मनुष्य गुणातीत होतो. त्यांच्या गळ्यातील सर्प म्ह्णजेच अभिमान, क्रोध आणि दोष या गुणांना वश करणारे भूषण आहे. धर्म म्हणजे वृषभ ते नेहमी वृषभावर (नंदी) आरूढ होतात. ते नेहमी विभूती (भस्म) देहातील पंच तत्व विलीन करून जे शवभस्म म्हणून लेप करतात. तेच निर्विकार शांती प्रदान करते. संपूर्ण चराचर भूत त्यांच्या अधीन आहें. त्यांचे प्रत्येक अंग, आणि आभूषण अध्यात्मिक अर्थ सांगतात. त्यांचे प्रत्येक नाव परममंगलमय, कल्याणमय, सर्वदुखनाशक, सर्वसुखविधायक, सर्वसिद्धीदाता आणि मोक्षकारी आहें. त्यांचे सर्व नाव  ‘नम: शिवाय’  या पंचाक्षर मंत्र जपात सिद्ध आहेत.  तेव्हा या आशुतोष श्रीशिवाची उपासना करून कृपा प्राप्त करुयां !  ‘ शिव’

पंचागात उभी कोष्टके पुष्कळ आहे. त्यापैकी पहिल्या क्षतकात एक, दोन, तीन असे जे स्नायूक्रमाने अंक दिलेले असतात त्या तिथी होत. दुसऱ्या कोष्टकात वार दिलेले असतात. वारांचे पूर्ण नाव न लिहिता पहिले अक्षर लिहितात. तिसऱ्या व चौथ्या कोष्टकात तिथिच्या घटीका व पळे हि दाखविलेली असतात. पाचव्या कोष्टकात दिवसांचे नक्षत्र दिले असतात. वारं प्रमाणे नक्षत्रांचा पहिला अक्षर लिहिण्याची प्रथां आहें. सत्तावीस नक्षत्रांपैकी ज्यांची आद्याक्षरे सारखीच आहें अशी काही नक्षत्रे आहे.
